ICON Carnation Building
Fusing a Historic Icon with Modern Residences
Completed in 2006, ICON integrates a 4 towered residential building with the original 1927 facade of the historic Carnation Dairy Factory. The building now consists of 327 residences constructed of solid concrete and steel on a 55,000 square foot brown-field industrial site, yielding to an urban industrial design.
Scope:
Our team provided the full scope of acoustical design services including mechanical noise and vibration control, plumbing isolation, environmental noise control recommendations, and mitigation solutions.
Challenges:
Being located in San Diego’s East Village beside the new baseball stadium, Petco Park, and adjacent to the new downtown library, ICON had environmental noise challenges due to heavy traffic arriving and departing the stadium.
Solutions:
Environmental noise monitors were placed at the site during baseball games in order to accurately predict the environment within residential units. Based on the predicted noise levels, window and wall assemblies were designed to achieve the desired acoustic performance, and architectural recommendations were developed for the facades of the building most affected by environmental noise.
